Mindfulness is “just paying attention in a particular way”, a way that unblock the possibility of being more present, more open and at the same time more equanimous in relationship with our internal and external experience. This state of being intentionally and non-judgmentally present, is in some sense an “alterated state of consciousness” or just the full blooming of the “natural fundamental state” of the consciousness? According to the traditional perspective from which mindfulness meditation comes, this possibility of silent presence is already and always available “here” in us, always accessible. Thus, meditation techniques are intended as “platform”or “possible paths” to come back to our inner nature, not as tools to build, construct some new state. It is interesting to make a distinction between two main families of meditation techniques: concentration and mindfulness. In any case the techniques are meaningful only insofar they promote the integration of this “particular ay to pay attention” in our daily experience. This “being already there” of mindfulness has also an important clinical meaning: if it is a natural state of us it can, at least in principle, always be accessed, even within the most difficult conditions. The psychotherapeutic applications are “successful” if the potential of dis-identification with our thought/feelings/emotions becomes a spontaneous new perspective in dealing with experience.
